Dolphins
INTRO
There are many different types of sea animals and they belong in different types of groups. They come in different shapes and sizes. I will tell you about them on this page.
Oceans
There are (5) five different oceans. They are the Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Southern, and Arctic. About 71% of the Earth is water. For many years, (4) four oceans were officially recognized but then, in the early spring of 2000, the International Hydrographic Organization established the Southern Ocean.
These are the oceans by size:
#1 Pacific (155,557,000 sq km)
#2 Atlantic (76,762,000 sq km)
#3 Indian (68,556,000 sq km)
#4 Southern (20,327,000 sq km)
#5 Arctic (14,056,000 sq km)
Dolphins
Dolphins are mammals and they can grow to about (6) six feet in length. Male dolphins can grow 4 to 8 inches longer than the females.
Bottlenose dolphin
Bottlenose dolphins are known as being intelligent and friendly. These sleek swimmers can reach speeds up to 18 miles (30 kilometers) per hour. They often reach the surface to breath every two or three times a minute. They often travel in social groups and send out loud squeaks and whistles to communicate with each other. These dolphins can track their prey through form of echolocation. These clever animals use this form to track down their prey thousands of miles. These mammals are carnivores ( which is an organism that eats meat) and can live for about 45 to 50 years. They feed on shrimp and squid and are found in tropical oceans and other warm areas around the globe. All dolphins including the bottlenose, are porpoises and are found in the group named, pod. They can weigh about 1,100 lbs (500 kg) and can be as long as 10 to 14 ft (3 to 4.2 m). These dolphins are common at Sea World.
